You're looking at a photo of the "Chateau" a roomy three story house located on 3 acres in Menlo Park near Palo Alto, CA and the campus of Stanford University. The Chateau was owned by artist Frank Serratoni who rented out rooms to students, artists, and musicians. In October of 1961 Jerry Garcia moved onto the grounds of the Chateau and lived in a car. Later, Garcia moved into the Chateau and took residence in a dirt-floored former root cellar. The Chateau was home for Garcia and other Grateful Dead members until 1963 when it was sold. The Chateau is considered by many to be the birthplace of the Grateful Dead. This professionally photographed and edited early photo of the Chateau measures 7 x 10 inches and is double matted.
